I wish to share with you in simple words what God has taught me in my workplace. He has also done great things! You be the judge!!
In my current role in Information Technology – owing to my professional certifications and years of experience – I’m expected to be a ‘Source of Solution'(SoS) in times of project distress (SOS). I have experienced God giving me every grace, counsel, wisdom, knowledge, memory power and guidance needed to meet the challenges in my workplace.
To share a recent incident… I’m responsible for migration of a DB2 UDB database to Oracle. I was using a tool given by Oracle to do the same. But I found a lot of errors in the migration process, owing to the nature of our data layout and usage in DB2 UDB. However, God guided me to get the information required and gave me the wisdom and counsel needed to resolve all issues as of date. To name a few:
- Extract millions of BLOB data from DB2 to Oracle – the tool failed in this. Technical support also had no easy solution but to rework on the tool – which could take time or to raise a Technical Assistance Request (TAR).
- Storage of bit data in VARCHAR format in DB2 to be replicated in Oracle.
- Default date format incompatibility when moving from DB2 to Oracle.
- Default timestamp format incompatibility during migration.
Everyday I pray to God for my workplace colleagues, managers and project responsibilities. When I climb the stairs to my floor of work; I thank God for He has given me the grace, wisdom, knowledge, memory power, counsel and guidance needed for the day.
Dear friend, what God has done for me, He will do for you! The word of God says in Psalm 32:8 “I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;I will counsel you and watch over you.” Reference: Psalm 32:8
Being in a highly competitive arena, I realize how important it is to have wisdom, the skill to do the right thing at the right time. I ask God who is the source of all wisdom, as found in James 1:5 and he gives me the same!
“If you do not have wisdom, ask God for it. He is always ready to give it to you and will never say you are wrong for asking.”
Reference: James 1:5
I look back in my professional career, to another role I was in (with another company). It was a very demanding and hectic role. However, I was determined to give my best and my all – even if the job demanded 24×7 support! This however did not get me far as I was always on the treadmill! It had its detrimental effect on my family and personal life. Worst of all my managers were not always pleased as they expected me to deliver the mountain, time and time again!!
This is when God spoke to me through His word in Psalm 127:2 & 1
“It is vain for you to rise up early,To sit up late,To eat the bread of sorrows; For so He gives His beloved sleep. Unless the LORD builds the house, They labor in vain who build it;Unless the LORD guards the city, The watchman stays awake in vain”. Reference: Psalm 127: 1, 2
God impressed on my heart that it is in vain that I try to please my boss, even by working night and day, as people cannot be pleased! Unless God provide for and bless my efforts they are all in vain!!
Dear friend, will you pray to God to visit you with His salvation?
Prayer: Father God, You have created me. The word of God says in Psalm 8:4, 5 that you are mindful of me and you visit me! Please visit me in my workplace with your grace, wisdom, knowledge & counsel. In the name of the Lord Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!
Reference: Psalm 8: 4, 5
