Question Answer Series [7]: Are you the Amos of this generation?

Question: Are you the Amos of this generation?

Answer: Once Amaziah, the priest of Bethel, then sent a report to King Jeroboam of Israel: “Amos is plotting against you among the people. His speeches will destroy the country. This is what he says: ‘Jeroboam will die in battle, and the people of Israel will be taken away from their land into exile.’”Amaziah then said to Amos, “That’s enough, prophet! Go on back to Judah and do your preaching there. Let them pay you for it. 13 Don’t prophesy here at Bethel any more. This is the king’s place of worship, the national temple.”

Amos answered, “I am not the kind of prophet who prophesies for pay. I am a herdsman, and I take care of fig trees. But the Lord took me from my work as a shepherd and ordered me to come and prophesy to his people Israel. So now listen to what the Lord says. You tell me to stop prophesying, to stop raving against the people of Israel. And so, Amaziah, the Lord says to you, ‘Your wife will become a prostitute in the city, and your children will be killed in war. Your land will be divided up and given to others, and you yourself will die in a heathen country. And the people of Israel will certainly be taken away from their own land into exile.’”

Amos 7:14 “Amos answered Amaziah, “I was neither a prophet nor the son of a prophet, but I was a shepherd, and I also took care of sycamore-fig trees” . This was the defense Amos gave when Amaziah the priest was upset with Amos’s prophecy and asked him to go away.

There are 5 major and 12 minor prophetic books in the Bible. Amos was the first written prophetic book in the Bible. For that task, Lord did not find a priest or prophet, but a simple faithful shepherd.

People at that time were very rich but oppressed poor, they had religious assemblies but were evil at heart, they offered a lot of sacrifices but never obeyed, they had worship and songs but never surrendered to God’s will.

Two lessons, number 1 Lord looks at your heart and walk with the Lord, the world will see your worship, riches, and your appearance. There will be a true earnest desire to do God’s will in secret if you are truly a child of God.

Number 2: The Lord can use the weak and the least significant in the eyes of the world. Lord is looking for faithful people. He is looking at your surrender, not your skill, The Lord needs your faithful availability, not your attractive ability.

Final thought: Are you the Amos of this generation?
