Text: Matthew 7:7–12 (AMP)
Introduction
Prayer is the lifeline of a believer, the means by which we communicate with our Heavenly Father. In Matthew 7:7–12, Jesus provides a clear and practical framework for approaching prayer. He uses three action words: ask, seek, and knock, emphasizing persistence and trust in God’s goodness.
Have you ever experienced frustration when you felt your prayers went unanswered? Jesus invites us not to give up but to persist with faith, trusting that God hears and answers in His perfect wisdom.
Background and Context
This teaching comes from the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5–7), where Jesus outlines principles for living in God’s Kingdom. Prayer is a major theme in this discourse (see also Matthew 6:9–13).
In this passage, Jesus uses simple yet profound analogies that resonate with daily life—bread and fish versus stones and snakes. He draws attention to the Father’s goodness and His desire to bless His children when they come to Him in faith.
Key Points
1. Ask and Keep on Asking (v.7a)
- Jesus commands us to ask boldly. This is an acknowledgment of our dependence on God as our Provider.
- The verb “ask” implies humility and faith—approaching God with the confidence that He hears us.
- Spiritual meaning: Asking reflects trust in God’s ability and willingness to give us what is good.
Illustration: A child asking their parent for something doesn’t hesitate, knowing their parent loves them. Likewise, we approach God as our loving Father.
2. Seek and Keep on Seeking (v.7b)
- Seeking goes beyond asking; it involves action and effort. It reflects persistence and a hunger for God’s will.
- To “seek” means to align our desires with His purposes, not giving up when we don’t see immediate results.
- Spiritual meaning: Seeking God deepens our relationship with Him and reveals His heart.
Illustration: A woman misplacing her wedding ring searches diligently until she finds it. Similarly, God desires that we actively seek Him and His answers.
3. Knock and Keep on Knocking (v.7c)
- Knocking implies intentionality and perseverance, even when doors seem closed. It’s about being relentless in faith.
- When we knock, we’re asking God to open opportunities or provide clarity for His plans.
- Spiritual meaning: Persistent knocking shows our reliance on God’s power to open the right doors.
Illustration: Imagine a friend persistently knocking on your door for help. You eventually respond, not because of their inconvenience, but because of your relationship. How much more will our loving Father respond?
4. God’s Goodness as the Basis for Prayer (v.9–11)
- Jesus uses earthly analogies (bread/stone, fish/snake) to illustrate the generosity of our Heavenly Father.
- Unlike earthly parents, God’s love is perfect. If we, as flawed humans, give good gifts to our children, how much more will God give to those who ask Him?
- Spiritual meaning: God’s answers may not always align with our desires, but they are always good, perfect, and aligned with His will.
Practical Applications
- Be Persistent in Prayer
- Commit to asking, seeking, and knocking daily. Don’t give up when answers seem delayed.
- Example: Set aside a consistent time for prayer, focusing on both specific requests and seeking God’s presence.
- Pray with Faith and Trust
- Trust that God knows what is best for you and will answer according to His will.
- Example: Journal your prayer requests and note when God answers. This builds faith in His faithfulness.
- Align Your Desires with God’s Will
- Prayer is not about bending God to our will but aligning our hearts with His purposes.
- Example: Pray for clarity and understanding when facing closed doors, rather than forcing them open yourself.
- Model God’s Generosity (v.12)
- The passage concludes with the Golden Rule. As we experience God’s goodness, we’re called to reflect it in how we treat others.
Conclusion
Jesus teaches that prayer is not a one-time event but a lifestyle of persistence and faith. By asking, seeking, and knocking, we deepen our dependence on God and align ourselves with His purposes.
Trust in the goodness of your Heavenly Father, who delights in giving you what is best. Take heart and pray boldly, knowing that God loves to answer His children.
Closing Illustration: Imagine a father watching his child trying to open a jar of cookies. The father doesn’t withhold help but delights in stepping in at just the right time. Similarly, God is ready to answer your prayers—ask, seek, and knock with confidence!
Memory Verse: “For everyone who keeps on asking receives, and he who keeps on seeking finds, and to him who keeps on knocking, it will be opened.” – Matthew 7:8 (AMP)
